Snow for Some, Flash Freeze for Parts of South

Winter storm Elliot is taking shape across the central US and will be bringing with it blizzard conditions to parts of Minnesota. Much of the northern plains and northern Great Lakes region will see snow and have a white Christmas. Meanwhile parts of the south will have a cold rain and then temperatures will dramatically drop to well below freezing within a matter of hours which could lead to a flash freeze across parts of Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia.

Wind Will Be A Major Factor

Not only are we having to pay attention to the precipitation side of this system but even more impactful for many will be the intense winds that the low pressure system will generate as it “bombs out” across the UP of Michigan Thursday into friday. Winds could gust over 60mph across parts of the northern plains and even be strong all the way down to the gulf coast. Wind chill watches have already been issued for much of the central and southeastern US ahead of the storm.

Some Preparation Tips

Here are a few tips to be reminded of as the winter storm gets underway

  • Insulate any exposed pipes and cover outdoor water spigots
  • Let a kitchen sink or faucet drip at a rate of about 4-5 drips/minute to keep the water in the pipes moving. It is harder for water to freeze when it is moving.
  • Set yout thermostat a few degrees warmer and open doors to cabenits under kitchen sinks and bathroom faucets on exterior walls to allow warmer air in.
  • Make sure if you have to travel to have a winter emergency kit in your car with at minimum extra blankets, flashlights, some non-perishable food and a way to keep your phone charged should you get stranded.
