The 2020 Hurricane Season has been extremely active thus far
The 2020 hurricane season has had 23 named storms so far. Beta recently became the ninth storm to landfall in the U.S. this year. The 2020 season is now tied with the 1916 record for most landfalls in a season, according to Phil Klotzbach, a tropical weather scientist at Colorado State University. Six of this years landfalls have been along the gulf coast. Laura is the strongest storm to landfall along the gulf this year. Hurricane Laura was a category 4 storm with winds up to 150 mph. Laura is tied with the 1856 Last Island hurricane as the strongest hurricane on record to make landfall in Louisiana. The 2020 Atlantic hurricane season has become so active that the Greek alphabet is now being used to name storms. Alpha and Beta are the first 2 storm names on the Greek Alphabet both have formed and have since This is the first year the Greek Alphabet has been used since 2005. In late July and early August Hurricane Isaias caused significant damage across parts of the Caribbean and eventually the U.S. east coast. Isaias made landfall in the Bahamas and eventually made landfall in North Carolina before causing damage in the Mid-Atlantic and northeastern U.S as a tropical storm. Warm seas surface temperatures and low wind shear are contributing factors for this extremely active hurricane season.
