Severe Weather Likely Today Across the Central Plains
A powerful storm system is digging its way across the central plains today and will bring with it the threat for severe weather from The Ohio Valley southwest to Texas. A shortwave trough will swing southeast and the associated cold front will be the boundary that will initiate storms. The atmosphere will be very moist with dew points in the 60’s across much of the warm sector ahead of the cold front. CAPE, which is a measure of instability, will also be 2,000+. Wind shear across the region should be between 45-50kts which will be supportive of supercells. The focus of the severe weather will be in much of central and eastern Oklahoma, northwest Arkansas, and southwest Missouri where very large hail greater than 2″ in diameter is going to be likely. The Storm Prediction center has issued a moderate risk for severe storms across this region to account for this threat (see image below). Large hail is not the only threat in the central plains, damaging winds will also accompany some of the stronger storms and a tornado or two can not be ruled out.
